Benefits of Hydrotherapy

Rehabilitation/Post Op dogs

We look after a wide variety of breeds with a wide variety of problems from post or preventative Cruciate Ligament surgery, hip dysplasia, post fractures and general joint or muscular problems. Most dogs who have had some type of joint or muscular procedure generally need rehabilitation. It has been proven combined with the right medical advice from your vet or physiotherapist, swimming has been a tremendous benefit to help get your dog back to his/her best. It is always best to check with your vet or physiotherapist before commencing with a Hydrotherapy exercise regime.

Weight loss

A combination of exercise and a good diet will help your dog reach and maintain their appropriate weight range. Weight gain or overweight dogs are generally contributed to by an incorrect diet and lack of exercise. It's a great idea to check with your vet about your dog’s weight and condition to see if your dog is within its healthy weight range. Dogs that are overweight do have increased pressure on their joints and muscles. The benefit of Hydrotherapy as a form of exercise for overweight dogs, is there is no pressure on their joints whilst they exercise. We also have bouncy vests available for use in many different sizes. Please consider utilizing our Canine Treadmill services in conjunction with a swimming routine. This has proven to be most effective in helping to shift those stubborn kilos.

Arthritis & Hip Dysplasia

Hip Dysplasia is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints. It is a genetic trait that can be found in many dog breeds, particularly larger breeds. Swimming/Hydrotherapy has long been recognized as a great non-surgical or preventive alternative form of exercise for dogs with hip dysplasia or arthritis. Swimming minimizes the pressure on the hips and joints whilst still increasing your dog’s heart rate and mobility. Keeping your dog’s weight within a healthy range is also a good idea. Check with your vet as to additional information and possible medications. Always check with your vet prior to commencing a swimming or any exercise program.

Swimming is also great for conditioning your dog when getting ready for a Dog Show, Agility Training or Trialing competition. There are huge benefits in improving your dog’s general muscle tone and health. It’s amazing the difference in your dog’s appearance after just a couple of weeks with 2 half hours sessions a week, it can make a world of difference to your dog’s physic whilst strutting around the show ring.

The Canine Treadmill has been a great companion alongside our Hydrotherapy pool. It's helped our clients dogs get back on their feet a lot quicker.
